Biography for Liz Dengate Thrush

Executive Sales Director, International Markets
GlobalESoft

I was co-opted to council in 1997 then elected for a two-year term at the 1998 AGM.I have been in technology and telecommunications for 18 years with New Zealand and overseas corporations in management, sales and consulting roles.

On Council I've been a member of the Policy committee for most of my term and responsible for drafting the society's policy on Policy Development . This was an important piece of work that included a mechanism for consultation both with members and the wider Internet community of interest.

I also drafted the Committee Structure and Workings paper that has provided a mechanism for including members of the Internet community of interest in the development of policies and harnessing the talents of members and others to contribute to the body of knowledge.

I have also re-developed the Communications Policy. This is in the implementation stage and includes re-development of the society's web site to enable council information to be more readily accessible.

I also completed the work begun by David Farrar on removing the ban on registration of Offensive Words as domain names.

I have been disappointed with our pace of change and I welcome the recent openness at meetings.I have materially supported this openness through my policy development contributions.I am pleased with our increasing professionalism as we move from a purely voluntary amateur group to a more representative public interest organisation. My efforts during my term have been to implement mechanisms for wide consultation and transparency of decision making.

I'm passionate about

  • The Internet as a mechanism for improving democracy
  • The Internet as a mechanism for improved business
  • Consultation and due process
  • Keeping the internet open and available for everyone
  • Public Interest
