Biography for Drew Whittle

I am standing for council because in the short time I have been a member I have become very concerned that there are major problems within ISOCNZ and action needs to be taken immediately to get ISOCNZ back on track.

The whole ccTLD/SRS issue is an important one. It is not, however, the sole reason for the existence of the society. I plan to try and get to the bottom of the ccTLD/SRS issue, so the society can move on. I firmly believe that not enough attention is being paid to other areas that ISOCNZ has an interest in.

It is also my belief that the council needs to represent the membership adequately, including representation from the South Island.

I have been involved in the Internet since approximately 1986. At first in a hobbyist capacity and then in 1995 it became my career. Since that time I have worked in various fields, but it has always been Internet related.

Highlights:

  • Setup and/or managed 7 Internet Service Providers, one covering all of the major cities in Australia.
  • Co-wrote a commercial e-commerce system that is currently in use by over 10,000 sites including About.com, BizLand, CNET, Terra Lycos, and iVillage.
  • Currently working on another e-commerce solution that builds on the knowledge I have gained since writing the earlier one.

Employer:

Apart from the activities above I have been working for the Computer Applied Research Centre at the University of Otago for the past two and a half years.
