Background Information

  • RFC 1591 The definitive document on the operation of the DNS while it was under control of the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) . Issued March 1994.
  • ICANN Fact Sheet . Global Internet management is increasingly being undertaken by The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) . The ICANN Fact Sheet gives a general background to ICANN.
  • Internet Domain Name System Structure and Delegation Commonly known as ICP-1 this document was issued in May 1999 by ICANN and IANA. It contains a statement of the policies then being followed by IANA in connection with ccTLDs. These policies are still in effect.
  • ccTLD Delegation and Administration Policies This is a discussion document from the March 2000 ICANN meeting in Cairo. It signals the significant outstanding issues at the international level and contains useful pointers to other views on the operation of ccTLDs.
  • The Final Report of the WIPO Internet Domain Name Process Chapter 2 of this document focuses on desirable or best practices for Registrars to avoid conflicts, in WIPO's opinion.
