Review of the Registry/Registrar Structure for the .nz ccTLD

Welcome

Welcome to the web site of the Registry Model Review Working Group. This site will be used to advise all information pertinent to the review. Please visit us often.

FINAL REPORT Released

The SRS Working Group is pleased to announce the release of its Final Report.

The working group thanks the many members of New Zealand's internet community who have contributed in ways big and small to the production of this document. A number of people have taken considerable time to provide careful and insightful analysis of our various drafts and to suggest alternative components. This effort has been greatly appreciated.

Woodenman Model Released

The SRS Working Group has refined it thinking based on comments on the three strawmen models and now presents a Woodenman model for discussion. This model should be treated as a draft final model. The Working Group expects to release its final report on Thursday, 19 October.

Strawmen Models for an SRS Registry

The SRS Working Group has developed three strawmen models for a SRS registry to guide further discussion. This page also contains pointers to several interesting DNS events and a summary of outstanding problems.

Comment on Draft Report

The second public draft of the working group's report was released on June 19th for discussion at the Society's AGM. A number of recommendations from the draft were accepted at the AGM but work remains to be done on the final details of a framework for the management of domain names within .nz.

The working group plans to publish several possible frameworks on this site in the near future. Comment is invited on the draft report and on the possible frameworks. Comment should be directed to model-review@isocnz.org.nz. To participate in the discussion on this list subscribe here.

2nd Draft Report Released

The second public draft of the working group's report is now available here . This report has been released at this time to facilitate discussion at the AGM. The working group has had a substantial amount of input in the last four days and the discussion on the review mailing list has been active over the past week. It has proven impossible to read, digest and then incorporate all of this input into a draft to be published before the AGM. However, this draft does represent an advance in our understanding and thinking about the problem and we hope it will encourage further discussion. We apologize if this draft is not as polished as it might have been.

The first public draft of the working group's report was released here . This report was presented to Council on Friday, 26 May. Frank March presented a response that is now included in our submissions here .

The Council accepted a part of Frank's response in passing motion 00/87:

(Moved March/Mason): THAT the Working Group report be rewritten, with the recommendations deleted and replaced by a number of key questions on which further input and discussion is invited, and presented at the AGM.

Domainz Response . Patrick O'Brien, CEO of Domainz, has provided a response from the Board of Domainz to the working group's first draft report. This has also been added to our list of submissions.

The second draft is our response to the preceeding motion and some of the additional comment we have received.

Authority

Responsibility for the .nz domain name space rests with the Internet Society of New Zealand. At the Society's AGM held in December 1999 a motion was carried:

That ISOCNZ Council set up an open working group to investigate a full proposal on possible shared registration systems and other registry models after consultation with Domainz.

The Council meeting of 31 March 2000 carried a motion initiating this investigation based on the attached document which sets out:

Meet with the Working Group.

The Working Group held open forums in Auckland and Wellington. A Christchurch forum was cancelled. See the reports below.

Submissions and Consultations

See the list of submissions .

Auckland

A forum was held on 13 April attended by Chris O'Donoghue; Peter Mott, 2Day.com; Ray Lewis; Bob Gray; Len Gray; John Hine; David Farrar; Rich Shera; and Don Stokes. On 14 April the Working Group visited Craig Anderson and Jim Benson at IPROLINK; Peter Mott at 2Day.com; and Karen Wynder at Xtra.

The discussions covered a topics ranging from the market for Domain names, business models, current problems with the Registry system and possible frameworks for a registry system and their impact. The Working Group unanimously agreed that the Auckland visit had been very productive and added greatly to their understanding of the requirements of different organisations. We thank the people listed above for taking the time to meet with the working group.

Wellington

A forum was held on 17 April attended by Michael Stevens, CPS Systems; Jim Higgins, Networking Edge and Domainz; Ewen McNeill; David Zanetti; Sean Liddall; Victoria University Information Technology Services; Hamish MacEwen; David Harpham; Don Stokes; David Farrar; Rick Shera; John Hine.

Like the Auckland meeting the discussion covered a range of topics. Ewen McNeill had brought copies of a draft of his submission and this was the basis for about half the discussion. Again the discussions enhanced and broadened the working groups knowledge and we greatly appreciate the time people gave to attend the forum.
