DNS Usage enquiry response 23/06/97

from The Internet Society of New Zealand

to Frank March, Implementation Manager, New Zealand Internet Institute, 23 June 1997

USE OF THE DNS DATABASE

Thank you for your letter of 19 May 1997 to the Society's Chairperson, Jim Higgins. The Internet Society of New Zealand looks forward to future cooperation with the New Zealand Internet Institute, both in specific efforts to disseminate information and more generally to promote the well-being of the Internet in New Zealand.

The more specific request in your letter appears to represent more of a problem. You appear to be asking for the society's endorsement for the commercial use of information made available by the Society concerning the holders of DNS names within the .nz domain. This information has been gathered by the Society to make possible the operation and the efficient administration of the DNS in New Zealand, and for no other purpose. While, as you note, much information about name holders is indeed made publicly available by the Society, the Society does not believe that it is able to confer any right on any other party, exclusive or otherwise, to make commercial use of this information unconnected with the purpose for which it was collected.

It is possible that, given greater legal certainty regarding rights to use DNS names, the amount of information about holders made available by the society will in future be reduced.

I should perhaps stress that this is an entirely separate issue from the publication of summaries taken from the DNS itself.

Your letter suggests that ISOCNZ may wish to provide on its web pages a link to the NZII's pages. I've referred that to the people responsible for the Society's web pages, and expect to see such a link there shortly. Could you please advise me if the link should be to anywhere other than http://www.nzii.org.nz .

May I also offer the Society's best wishes for the success of the Institute.
