Proposal to Create .bank.nz fails to meet Support Threshold

The proposal to create a new second level domain, '.bank.nz', failed today at the second stage of the public consultation process. "There were 481 votes cast, but the proposal only gained 56% support, well short of the 70% level required to move onto the next stage." said InternetNZ Executive Director Sue Leader.
The first stage of the process to create a new second level domain in .nz is an extensive online discussion, and the second stage is an online poll. "The '.bank.nz' proposal generated a lot of discussion and we weren't surprised that the online poll reached the first threshold which requires that at least 200 votes be cast." Leader said. "The proposal's failure to meet the 70% support threshold reprises the previous outcome in April 2001." she noted.
"InternetNZ policy for creation of new second level domains requires significant support for a proposal to succeed. The support for the first new second level domain since 1996, '.maori.nz' was clear - over 1600 members of the New Zealand Internet community voted in that poll, with 91.7% in favour - a result which made InternetNZ's decision relatively easy." Leader said.
The current process for the creation of new second level domains is complex and lengthy, and some feel it should be simplified. InternetNZ's Domain Name Commissioner, Debbie Monahan, plans to review the current process as a part of the review of all .nz Policies in the near future. In the meantime InternetNZ has imposed a moratorium on all new proposals until the review is completed.
"Now that the '.bank.nz' proposal is completed the one outstanding proposal - 'geek.nz' - will move forward. The Domain Name Commissioner will announce the timetable for that consultation later this month." Leader said.
