Appointment of Domain Name Commissioner

InternetNZ is delighted to announce it has appointed Debbie Monahan as the inaugural Domain Name Commissioner. This appointment is a significant milestone in the development of the Internet in New Zealand with Ms Monahan taking responsibility for the day to day oversight of the operation of the .nz domain name registration and management system.

Ms Monahan will initially oversee the final stages of the transition
to the shared registry, including the authorisation of registrars, and
the transfer of management of specific domain names from Domainz to the
authorised registrars. In the longer term, she will be responsible for
the ongoing development and monitoring of the competitive registrar
market, and the environment for registration and management for .nz
domain names.
Ms Monahan has considerable experience with registries having been
the National Manager responsible for the development and implementation
of the Personal Property Securities Register. She has also been the
Acting National Manager of all business registries for the Ministry of
Economic Development, and the Assistant Commissioner of Patents, Trade
Marks and Designs. Her training and early work experience came as a
forensic scientist and she is currently a regional manager with the
Department of Corrections.
InternetNZ Vice-President Rick Shera commented that “InternetNZ is
very pleased to have found a Domain Name Commissioner of such a calibre
who can bring to the position a unique and highly relevant mixture of
skills and experience. Ms Monahan’s background in legal environments,
establishing and running core business registries, national client
management, and her intellectual property experience, which includes
representing New Zealand at World Intellectual Property Office fora,
will be invaluable”.
Ms Monahan will commence work as the Domain Name Commissioner in mid May.
Other milestones reached in the shared registry implementation
include the recent release of the draft technical architecture for the
register and the commencement of the prototyping phase to test that
architecture. Implementation of the shared registry project is
scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2002.
