InternetNZ appoints Chief Executive Officer

Media Release - 1 February 2010 - InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) is pleased to announce the appointment of Vikram Kumar as its new Chief Executive Officer. Vikram will be responsible to the elected InternetNZ Council for oversight of staff and managing the work of the offices of the Policy Unit and the Shared Services Unit.

InternetNZ President Frank March says "We look forward to working with Vikram in pursuit of our objectives - a high performance Internet with unfettered access for all."

Vikram was previously with the State Services Commission since November 2004 in three roles: Manager Strategy and Innovation; Programme Manager Future Services; and Principal Advisor ICT.  Prior to this he was Business Technology Manager – Projects at Telecom New Zealand from 2001 to 2004.

Vikram Kumar says “An open and uncaptureable Internet is vital for New Zealand. InternetNZ is making a valuable contribution to protecting and promoting the Internet. I am looking forward to this opportunity to work with Council, members, government, and the community to address the challenges and opportunities the Internet provides us all."

InternetNZ's subsidiaries - NZRS and DNCL are not directly affected by this appointment, each having their own management and boards that report into Council.

Vikram takes over the helm from Acting CEO Richard Currey, who has been in the role since April 2009. Richard took leave from his position as Chair of DNCL and remains on the DNCL Board. President March thanks Richard for his many achievements in the Acting CEO role.

"Richard has provided a sure hand on the tiller during a crucial time in InternetNZ’s history. As well as overseeing significant administrative changes within the organisation, he has been engaged with major policy issues including fibre access, copyright and Internet filtering. During his tenure InternetNZ also organised the New Zealand IPv6 Hui and the R v the Internet seminar - events that were very successful."
