Internet2 Steering Group Report to Council 30/08/02
The major activity of the group in recent months has been firstly to get the Capability Study for the NGI Research, Education and Innovation network underway, and then to help guide the Study.
Laurence Zwimpfer, our lead consultant, has been working solidly on the Study and has now delivered a first draft to the Group. The Group are working through the report and will assist Laurence in the production of the final report. The Group have been holding a weekly telephone conference meeting during the Capability Study. There will be a 'report back' meeting on the morning of Thursday 19th September in Wellington. Around 150 invitations have been sent out to those who have shown interest in the project. Attendees will receive a copy of the report before the meeting and it is intended to talk to the report at the meeting and conduct focus groups to get more input and direction from the attendees.
Subsequently we expect to use an invitation provided by Paul Swain earlier in the year to set up a meeting with the 'digital' Ministers to brief them and ask for their support, and explore how New Zealand can move forward in this important area.
We also plan to contribute a major section to the planned TUANZ led conference on Broadband Applications in early November. We are seeking sponsorship for overseas speakers and to support real live demonstrations of NGI advanced applications.
