NZOC Monthly Report for April 2006


  1. NZRS Report

NZRS have produced their monthly report for April 2006. Main points NZOC would like to highlight with Council are:

  • System availability for April was 99.98% against the SLA standard of 99.9%

There were no major incidents affecting availability in April, with all outages being micro outages totalling 8 minutes and 58 seconds

  • The scheduled maintenance window was utilised on 30 April, and another scheduled outage took place on 9 April to switch the primary site back to Albany

  • Performance times for key transactions for April are in the following table:

*NS6 did not respond to TCP queries for a period of 34 minutes and 15 seconds between 07:33:06 and 08:07:21 on 8 April. NS5 continued to respond throughout this period so there was no degradation of the Ultra DNS service.

Response Times

The figures are derived from the 'stress testing' of the name servers. 1201 UDP and 121 TCP transactions are used. Measurements are in milli-seconds.

  • SRS Zone Pushes

No issues have been reported with the zone pushes.

These figures show the average time taken from the point that the first Primary begins the zone push to the time that the last of the secondary’s acknowledges that it is up to date.

  • The total number of WHOIS queries decreased from 1,891,000 to 1,738,000. Both public WHOIS Server queries and Registrar WHOIS queries decreased compared to last month.

  • The level of active .nz domain names increased from 221,433 to 225,475, a net increase of 4,042. The number of domain names registered over the month was again in excess of 6,000 with 6,426 ‘create domains’ transactions.

  1. .nz Policies and Procedures

2.1 Registrar Compliance

No major compliance issues were identified during April.

    1. Policy Reviews

There are currently no reviews being undertaken

2.3 Applications

No applications were received under the Zone Transfer Policy and no applications for a new Second Level Domain were received.

  1. Registrar authorisation and connection

There were five organisations authorised as .nz registrars over April – 123 Internet Limited, Airnet Limited, Pacific Technology Solutions Limited, OpenHost Limited and Combo Marketing Limited. One authorised registrar connected to the production system over April – WebFarm joined their related company FreeParking as an operational registrar.

  1. Other .nz matters

It is planned to put out a Request for Information in order to evaluate options for the provision of legal services for the DNC Office. The current provider, Minter Ellison Rudd Watts, will be asked to respond.

  1. DRS Planning

    Work during April included:

  • Continued development and testing of the online forms and their integration with the internal database

  • Content for web site help and information brochure drafted

  1. DNC Office

  • Recruitment of a Dispute Support Officer (previously Admin Officer) continued and was successful with the appointment of Hilary Pope to the role. Hilary is due to start with the office around the middle of May.

  1. Financial

As at 22 May, financial reports for the end of 05/06 financial year and for April 06 had not been received. These figures will be provided in the next report.
