AEISEC Report to InternetNZ Council Meeting 13/12/03

Status: Received at Council Meeting 13/12/03

Meeting with AIESEC New Zealand

http://www.aiesec.org.nz

14th of November, meeting held with 4 representatives of Aiesec New Zealand and InternetNZ. (60 minutes)

Aiesec representatives:

  • Sharon Hastie National President
  • Christo Fogelberg President Aiesec Victoria
  • Ryan Shephard National Committee
  • Nick Kingston Aiesec Victoria University

InternetNZ:

  • Keith Davidson
  • David Farrar
  • Simon Riley
  • Michael Sutton
  • Peter Macauley

PURPOSE

The Purpose of this meeting was to introduce representatives of both organizations. A preparatory meeting was held with Christo Fogelberg and Nisarg Mehta.

Aiesec opened by describing their Organization’s purpose, international structure, technology and corporate support base. They described their 100,000 pop collaborative web site which is based on OpenACS. The noted the international linkages and similarities. The breadth of skill sets within the organization was noted eg the President is Public Policy, others are Marketing, Computer Science, Lawyers etc. This provides InternetNZ with a continuous introduction to real kiwi talent and quality future leaders who will understand InternetNZ from the get-go as well as having an international base of graduates from nearly a thousand universities.

Peter Macauley used the organizational chart to detail the structure of InternetNZ.

Ideas were exchanged on areas where Aiesec and InternetNZ could be involved with each other. These were positively received by the other members of InternetNZ present.

It was suggested that Aiesec might/should become a bronze member of InternetNZ. It was thought that discussions relating to IntenetNZ membership and tertiary students could be explored with Aiesec.

Keith asked I write a report for this December 13th Council Meeting.

I agreed to meet with Aiesec National Committee in Auckland on the 30th of November at their National Leadership Conference.

In an e-mail received immediately following the meeting Christo Fogelberg wrote:

“…talking with the other three who came to the meeting today, and also Judit Schneider of the national committee, and we were unanimous that this is something we want to pursue further. It looks like Sharon and I will be fronting the contact, and I look forward to the mutual benefits to come …”

At the meeting of the 30th-4th December AIESEC partnered with 3M, McKinsey, Siemens and others published a full colour report. In a section written by Christo Fogelberg, it stated that

“…. Is working to help build a partnership between InternetNZ and Aiesec. With a long-range perspective, this partnership will hopefully offer further professional development opportunities for our members…”

Travelling up to Auckland Christo Fogelberg was involved in a critical car accident in the Waikato this has prevented the discussions from taking place during the past week.

Sharon Hastie (President) restated to me while in Auckland her commitment to building an association with InternetNZ.

Aiesec provides access to regularly generation of refreshed, quality driven, youth leadership from New Zealand universities suitable for focus groups, membership and support though its highly effective Exchange program of such elements as the Registry Service Software, and other InternetNZ related activities.

While at this meeting I spoke with Michael Dunlop (MD Consultus) and member of Aiesec National Board of Advisors regarding InternetNZ multicast and Aiesec, likewise with Graham Sumner MD of Siemans and alumnus of Aiesec.

ACTION POINT:

I will move that the Council endorse continued discussion with Aiesec and seek direction from Council as to what shape this should take.

Hi Michael,

Just wanted to say "many thanks" for helping to set up this meeting today. I was talking with the other three who came to the meeting today, and also Judit Schneider of the national committee, and we were unanimous that this is something we want to pursue further. It looks like Sharon and I will be fronting the contact, and I look forward to the mutual benefits to come :-)

Cheers,

Christo

Hi everyone,

Since noone except Michael has got back to me, I'm going to arbitrarily suggest 2pm - 3pm, with allowance for things possibly running a bit longer if we end up having a really good discussion.

At this stage I suggest me and Nisarg for the presentation, since we've been working with Michael to date, and then either Sharon or Nick as well. Are you guys free at that time?

Christo
