Alick Wilson election statement / bio

AW

InternetNZ is facing some important challenges. I want to make a real contribution to addressing these challenges so I am now putting my name forward for election as a Councillor.

I was an ICANN GNSO Councillor from 2002 to 2005. I participated in the creation of global Internet policy and gained a good understanding of Internet technologies and the operation of ICANN, gTLDs and ccTLDs.

I joined InternetNZ in 2006. In those three years since I have gained the knowledge of the organisation and its history which I believe is essential for a new Councillor.

I hope to bring a fresh perspective to the unresolved issues following the 2007 restructuring. This should start with the promised post implementation review, with an appraisal of the benefits versus costs.

I support the appointment of a permanent CEO. The role of the CEO needs to be very clearly defined. The operational expectations of the organisation also need to be defined and agreed as part of the annual planning process.

InternetNZ is deservedly well respected for its policy and advocacy. I would like to see this function enhanced, with encouragement for greater member involvement and more proactive work on “futures”.

I support the use of domain name registration fees to support the objectives of InternetNZ, including “good of the Internet” projects. Funding and organisational support for groups which are essential to core Internet infrastructure (such as NZNOG) must continue. To improve accountability both to members and .nz registrants I would like to see a more rigorous, formalised investment assessment process such as used by charitable organisations internationally.

I would also like to see further study into the membership model, to ensure that InternetNZ can enhance the claim to represent the interests of Internet users in NZ and to ensure that it remains uncapturable.
