Technical Committee Report to Council 26/11/99

November 25 DRAFT

Background

A WHOIS server is a Internet Standard way of access details from, in our case, the .nz database.

  • It is an alternative way to accessing the information than via a WEB page.
  • It is used generally by system administrators.
  • It is currently provided by all major Name service organisations, e.g. CRSNIX, NSI, Nominet, etc.
  • It is an easier way for Agents to interface with the Data to get, for example, technical information for a particular domain.

WHOIS Policy

  1. That NZIRL be required to put in place a standard WHOIS server on the .nz database, by end of December 1999, with output compling with the standard RIPE format. NZIRL will consult with its major agents to establish any adjustments to response formats required.
  2. That this WHOIS server will give access to, at a minimum, the same information that is shown on the WEB Page Interface.
  3. The WHOIS server will limit wild card searches and requests from any one source to a maximum of 50 responses.
  4. Any changes to this policy will not take place without consultation with the Membership of ISOCNZ and Major Agents.
