Technical Committee Report 26/05/00

The Technical Committee has over the last month reviewed the Zone Transfer Policy and reviewed the comments regarding the of the new Domain Registry System (DSR) by Domainz and some of the concerns raised by Registrars.

Zone Transfer Policy.

The technical committee has updated this policy and sent to for comment to the Policy Committee and to the CEO of Domainz. No response has come back from the Policy Committee at this stage. The CEO has nor responded directly to the change that was made at their request but has flagged several other areas of concern.

It is intended to meet with the CEO of Domainz to discuss this further before any further steps are taken.

DRS Changeover Review.

The technical committee was asked to take it upon itself to draft a set of questions to put for answer to the Chair of domainz.

The Committee meet with the Chair of ISOCNZ Tuesday 16th May to discuss what appeared to have been concerns by Registrars. The conclusion of the committee was that the roll-out of the DRS appeared at this stage largely successful. There did appear to be some serious concerns to do with:

  1. Quality control of some of the processes that took place before and after the changeover seems to have been missing altogether.
  2. Serious lack of communication during the changeover process with the community of interest, especially regarding issues and problems that were apparent and being expressed by Registrars.
  3. Lack of information provided to Domain Name Holders "before" the change over processed regarding changes to their details in the registry.
  4. Questions were raised as to the reliability of some of the data that was used in the new DRS and some review or consistency checking may be in order.
  5. It is clear that some of the problems that have arisen during the change over confirm the communication problems existed during the requirements process.

If the committee was asked to evaluate the roll out it would have given a "B" for the DRS roll-out itself and an "F" for PR/Communication.

PDT was to write a response to be posted to the public after review by the technical committee.
