President's Report to Council on APTLD Meeting 21-23/12/03

The APTLD's return to holding technical meetings in conjunction with Member and Board meetings was obviously well received, with a good attendance of technical folk from throughout the region, despite the high cost for many to get to New Zealand. Unfortunately I was unable to attend much of the 2 days of technical presentations, but those sections I did attend were useful, and the speakers appeared very knowledgeable in their specialist areas.

On the afternoon session of the 2nd day, Debbie Monaghan, Nick Griffin and I presented a session on the NZ SRS. Copies of the Power Point presentations are available at:

We were called in at short notice, due to Drew Whittle's resignation from INZ, as Drew was initially scheduled to present this topic.

The cocktail function on Friday evening was well attended, and a most social and pleasant evening. Photographic evidence of the function and meetings is unfortunately available at www.aptld.org/gallery/aptld2003nz .

The members meeting was non-controversial, and it was pleasing to see new membership applications to join APTLD. There was nothing I observed in the outcomes that was not consistent with .nz positions. So rather than cover the same ground within this report, it is perhaps easier to refer readers to the draft minutes at www.aptld.org/newsite , and for me to answer any specific questions. In common with our NZ concerns, whois policy, WSIS and Wildcard DNS appear to be of growing concern to the APTLD Managers.

The APTLD secretariat is currently undertaken by TWNIC, and this function will expire during 2004. I believe having had the opportunity to host a meeting in Wellington, and for the APTLD community to meet and mix with the INZ staff and council, we may now be in a good position to apply for the APTLD secretariat function for the next contract period. This may increase INZ staffing requirements without adversely affecting the INZ budget, and I raise the issue as an opportunity for us to begin considering the concept.

The APTLD AGM is confirmed for 26 February 2004 to be held in Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with APRICOT.

Although invited to attend, I declined to attend the APTLD Board meeting. The meeting apparently progressed smoothly, and draft minutes are available at www.aptld.org/newsite

My thanks to all INZ people who attended, helped out, and made our AP friends feel at home during their Wellington visit. My very special thanks to Nick Wallingford for stepping in to chair fairly much all of the 2 days of technical meetings at extremely short notice, due to the non-attendance of the scheduled chair.

Recommendations:

  • That this report be received.
