Council Nominee - Stewart Fleming

Nominee for Council 2007-2009

Stewart (Stu) Fleming

Stu is currently Managing Director of WIC NZ, providing wired and wireless Internet access to Dunedin business and residential customers. He has a BEng degree in Information Engineering from the University of Strathclyde and a PhD in Computer Science from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland.

Stu is passionate about all things Internet, having spent nearly 20 years in the IT and networking sector and academia. Involved in computing from the age of 8, he has an affinity for all things technical, but prefers things that work.

After working in the UK IT industry for 3 years, Stu then spent 3 years teaching Business Computing, IT consulting and building computer networks in Papua New Guinea. He assisted with the launch of commercial Internet services and introduction of Domain Name services for the .pg domain in 1997.

On moving to New Zealand in 1998, Stu spent 7 years lecturing in Computer Science at the University of Otago and 2 years as liaison to Black Albatross before establishing WIC in 2005.

Stu lives in Dunedin in the South Island and is married to Donna with one child, Angus, who likes to play with patch cords.

“The entire New Zealand Internet and telecommunications industries stand at an interesting point. The momentum that InternetNZ has generated in recent years places it in exactly the right position to advocate the right kind of change that will stimulate real economic growth.”

“I am passionate about Internet technologies and the benefits that they can bring if deployed freely and diversely. I would bring a wealth of diverse experience to Council, through my current South Island based experience and the combination of academic and professional expertise from my former roles.”

“I see every day in my current role the challenges that creative and innovative New Zealand businesses face in getting their products to national and international markets. The development of strong networking capabilities that are appropriate for these enterprises is a key part of the future growth of the entire nation. Let’s make that happen”
