Report of the Legal & Regulatory Affairs Committee 03/08/01

The prime focus has been on the domain name dispute area (see separate WG report)

Other areas which are bubbling:

  1. The Crimes Amendment Act No6 has been reported back from select committee with some changes. Ewen McNeill who headed the Working Group which made the Society's submission is looking at these.
  2. MED has issued the Digital Technology & Copyright Act 1994 Discussion Paper which asks some interesting questions of direct relevance to the Society's stakeholders.
A WG lead by the Chair of the Committee is to be formed to analyse this and prepare a submission on behalf of the Society. Expressions of interest have been called for for the WG but with little response.
Submissions close on 12 October 2001. In particular, the Discussion Paper raises issues as to the level of liability (if any) that ISPs might have for materials which come through, or are hosted on, their servers. Terms of Reference for the WG will be developed for approval once the WG membership is settled.
  3. Consequent on the above, L&R Committee will need to be involved in the ISP Summit.
