Biography for Peter Dengate Thrush

Peter is a barrister, specialising in intellectual property, competition, tax and Internet matters.

He has provided advice to InternetNZ on domain names since that body was formed to take management of the .nz Registry, and has acted as Counsel for the Society in a number of domain name cases.

In December 1999 he was elected to the Council of InternetNZ (then ISOCNZ) which elected him Chair. He was subsequently re-elected, serving until July 2001.

He monitored the International Forum on the White Paper, and attended what was to be its final meeting in Boston, in September 1998.

He participated in preparing InternetNZ's position on the WIPO process, which culminated in recommendations to ICANN on trade mark vs domain name disputes, and served on ICANN 's working group A, which resulted in the development of the Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy, binding on registrants in .com.

In March 1999 he was appointed to the Independent Review Advisory Committee of ICANN, which recommended a policy to provide a supervisory panel to review any complaints that the ICANN board had breached or not followed the bylaws in any matter.

Since then, he has been actively involved in developing consensus positions among the other country code top level domain managers, over issues such as relations with ICANN, Best Practices for cctlds and the re-structuring of ICANN. He is the Senior Vice Chair of APTLD, the Asia Pacific representative to the cc Administrative Committee, and the Chair of InternetNZ's International Affairs committee.
