Domain Name Commissioner
Report to .nz Oversight Committee – July 2002

This is my first report to the .nz Oversight Committee. I have kept this report brief as I covered off a number of activities with you at the first meeting we had on 6 July.

Activities over the last month regarding .nz matters include:

  • The agreement between InternetNZ, Domainz and the Registry Company has been finalised and signed. It is planned to scan this and make a copy available for viewing on both the InternetNZ and DNC sites.

  • A legal decision regarding the process of allocating Domain Names to registrars was obtained from Andrew Brown, QC. This opinion will be used as the basis of setting the policy and procedures for domain name allocation to new registrars under the SRS.

  • DNC web site launched www.dnc.org.nz This site has been set up as a resource for information on the SRS and to raise awareness of the DNC office and the role of the DNC. As the SRS is implemented, it will be the key place for registrars and registrants to obtain information from. Though the DNC is under its own logo, it has clear links identified through to InternetNZ, and the cards and letterhead have been designed to match the general style of InternetNZ.

  • A presentation on the SRS implementation has been developed. It has been presented to Domainz staff and presentations have been undertaken in New Plymouth, Hamilton and Auckland. Presentations are also planned for Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. It is expected that over 140 people would have attended the presentation by the time they are all completed.

  • Migration and implementation plans are being developed in conjunction with Domainz and the registry. These plans will include information on mitigating any identified risks.

  • I am currently working on the list of policies and procedures required under the SRS. This list, together with an outline of the policy principles and general content, will be sent out for discussion at the next meeting of the Committee.

I am planning to produce reports on a monthly basis, and will time these to coincide with any meeting planned for that month. I will produce a report each month even if there is no formal meeting. If there is anything specific you would like me to cover off in my reports please let me know. I expect that the nature of my reports will evolve as the SRS is implemented.
