Description:

The IPv6 project “champions” the NZ conversion to IPv6 within the industry, including telco’s, ISP’s, corporates, and home users.

  • Overarching objective: “Create the roadmap for IPv6 deployment in New Zealand”.

  • Engage with potential IPv6 community.

  • Monitor IPv6 initiatives.

  • Prepare micro-site as a resource / reference base for IPv6 in NZ.

  • Engage with Central Government.

  • Engage with Industry Stakeholders.

Budget:

$20,000 has been budgeted for the IPv6 project in 2009/10.

Overall Progress Summary:

To achieve the objectives listed above, a small team of technically astute IPv6 experts was assembled, to consolidate knowledge and develop enthusiasm for the objectives.

In 2008 Joint technical workshops were held in August/September in Christchurch/Auckland in 2008.

A Government working group was formed with InternetNZ representation and it meet to form a steering group convened by Dr Murray Milner. A Technical Resource sub-group was set up that reports into the steering group.

An IPv6 Hui was held in August 2009, preceded by an IPv6 Readiness survey of CIOs.

History:

August 2009

  • The IPv6 Hui was held in Christchurch, Auckland and Wellington on 19,20 and 21 August respectively. There were about 240 registrations across the three cities, or about 200 attendees (The difference is due to sponsors and speakers travelling to two or three cities). Vint Cerf was keynote in Auckland and Wellington.
  • The IPv6 Readiness Survey was analysed and presentated at the IPv6 Hui. There were 37 responses from a list of the top 100 CIOs.
  • A media release was released on behalf of the Steering Group, regarding Vint Cerf's attendence at the Hui.

July 2009

  • Hui - Updated the IPv6 microsite with details and programme
  • Hui - Sent out invites to CIO and IT management lists
  • Hui - Identified further sponsorships
  • Hui - Finalised the programme
  • Hui - Advertised in Computerworld and Telecommunciations Review
  • Hui - Set up and operated registration system
  • Hui - Launched IPv6 Readiness Survey
  • Hui - Sundry other organising/logistical duties

June 2009

  • Further development of the IPv6 microsite including deploying a wiki documenting best practice for IPv6 deployment

February 2009

  • Meeting of the IPv6 Steering Group where draft ToR and action plan were discussed.

December 2008/January 2009

  • IPv6 microsite has had some updating including a page showing the New Zealand IPv6 Status Survey, descriptions of the IPv6 Steering Group and related mailing lists hosted by InternetNZ.
  • IPv6 Tech-Sig mailing list was set up.

November 2008

  • Participate in IPv6 working group. Mailing list was set up and populated. InternetNZ hosted meeting to formulate steering group.

September 2008

  • Christchurch workshop and Auckland workshop completed successfully.

August 2008

  • Christchurch workshop began at end of August.

July 2008

  • Workshop invitations released and arrangements begun.

June 2008

  • Staff met to develop plan for hosting IPv6 workshops and hui.

January - March 2008:

  • Initial preparations for hosting an IPv6 Hui and workshops.

2007:

  • Throughout the year InternetNZ worked with various stakeholders to identify events/dates to host an IPv6 Hui.
  • InternetNZ and KAREN held a joint IPv6 technical workshop at the InternetNZ office in August.
