Alick Wilson bio / election statement

AW

I was an ICANN GNSO Councillor from 2002 to 2005. I became deeply involved in global Internet policy and gained a good understanding of Internet technology and the operation of ICANN, gTLDs and ccTLDs.

After this interesting and rewarding experience I joined InternetNZ so that I could participate in an organisation which is critically important to the Internet in New Zealand.

InternetNZ is facing some important challenges. I want to make a greater contribution to addressing these challenges than is possible as just a member so I am now putting my name forward for election as a councillor.

InternetNZ has a critically important part to play in forming and promoting policies underpinning Internet infrastructure. InternetNZ is well respected for its policy advocacy. I would like to see an extended policy development and advocacy function, with encouragement for greater member involvement and with early work on “futures”.

I support the use of fees from NZRS to support the objectives of InternetNZ, including “good of the Internet” projects. To improve accountability both to members and .nz registrants I would like to see a more rigorous, formalised investment assessment process such as used by charitable organisations internationally. However, it is my view that funding and organisational support for groups which are essential to core Internet infrastructure (such as NZNOG) is mandatory.

The 2007 organisational changes have not been entirely successful. If I am elected I hope to bring a fresh perspective to the unresolved issues.

The governance, management and operations for NZRS and DNC seem to be working well. The governance, management and operations of the rest of the organisation need work. The appointment of an Acting CEO is a good interim step towards the appointment of a permanent CEO. The role of the CEO needs to be clarified and the operational expectations defined and agreed as part of the annual planning process.

Some members have said that the organisation is overweighed in governance, out of proportion to the size and nature of the organisation. Others support the current structure. If elected, I will do my best to ensure that the promised post implementation review goes ahead as soon as possible and provides an honest appraisal of the benefits versus costs.
