Andrew McMillan bio / election statement

Andrew trained as an electronics technician in the early '80s before crossing over into computing in 1983. While working for Coopers & Lybrand in 1989, Andrew first worked with local-area networks and also started operating an electronic bulletin board from home.

In 1997 Andrew joined several friends in founding Catalyst IT Ltd, which he remained a director of until retiring from the company in 2008. While at Catalyst Andrew was responsible for the high-level design of the Shared Registry System, and was initially in charge of many technical aspects of the services provided to NZ Registry Services until moving on to other projects, including the provisioning of IPv6 capable infrastructure at Catalyst.

In 2008 Andrew founded Morphoss Ltd, in order to focus on providing consultancy about free and open-source software. Andrew became a Debian Developer in 2001 and currently serves on the Policy Committee for Debian: (http://www.debian.org/ ).

In addition to his involvements with the web, and with free and open source software, Andrew has also served for several years on the board of Parents Centres New Zealand, an organisation involved in education of parents and prospective parents ( http://www.parentscentre.org.nz/ ), and for two years on the national executive committee of the New Zealand Association for Gifted Children.

Andrew is the primary author of several free software projects, most notably the free CalDAV Server “DAViCal”, which is in use by more than a thousand organisations worldwide.
