Simon is an advisor to government, ICT policy analyst, Industry commentator, a seasoned media professional, business and marketing consultant and all-around provocateur.

Simon has been a long standing advocate of Information Society issues and was one of the architects of Wellington' s InfoCity initiative in which he founded 2020 Communications Trust and Continues to serve as a Trustee . The 2020 Trust has been at the forefront of promoting Digital Divide initiatives in New Zealand and has been responsible for a number of international award winning Digital Divide initiatives beginning with NetDay and most recently Computer in Homes.

Over the past 4 years on Council I have brought both vision and leadership to the Society with a track record of initiating , championing and delivering significant new initiatives

Some highlights

1. Advanced Network

Sponsored the INZ Internet 2 Steering committee which published “ Collaborating at Speed “ report which led to the formation of the NGI NZ society in 2003 and commitment of Central Government for the establishment of the NZ Advanced R & E Network to be launched late 2005 . Elected to the NGI NZ Board in 2003 and again in 2005 and currently serves as CEO.

2. Cyberlaw Fellowship

Sponsored and negotiated an MOU with Victoria University which established Cyberlaw Fellowship (an announcement will be made regarding the selection of the first Cyberlaw fellow in the next few months).

3. PIP - Pacific Internet Partners

Sponsored and negotiated groundbreaking MOU with UNESCO and UNDP to improve IT Skills in the Pacific.

4. Strategic Plan

Chair of the Strategic Planning Working Group which resulted in first ever Strategic Plan for INZ in 2003

Communications and Membership

Currently a co sponsor and champion of Communications and membership review . As well member of the project team implementing CMS for INZ web site in the coming months

Digital Opportunities Foundation

Champion and Chair of working group to examine the viability of a Foundation to support public good IICT projects . Note – this development has been highlighted in the recently released Digital Strategy

Broadband

Will continue to be a champion for more competitive Broadband environment particularly the need for Regional and MUSH ( Municipal , University , Schools, Hospital ) open access Networks now major funding initiative of the Digital Strategy

Internet industry issues - Peering
