Government E-Commerce Summit - Auckland, 3-4 October

Greetings

The Government, under the leadership of the Minister for Information Technology, will host a two-day E-Commerce Summit on 3-4 October at the Aotea Centre in Auckland. The IT Policy Group of the Ministry of Economic Development is organising the conference on behalf of the Minister.

Since the Government first announced its intention to hold an e-commerce summit, a number of organisations and firms have expressed a desire to contribute to its success. Given the potentially high level of interest, we are inviting organisations and individuals to indicate how they would see themselves being involved in a partnership or sponsorship arrangement and what expectations they would have around any such involvement.Following this we will be progressing those expressions of interest that fit within the opportunities available and the nature of Government's focus for the event.

As the programme will include an emphasis on small and medium businesses, contributions from smaller businesses using e-commerce successfully, or supplying e-commerce solutions, who are willing to share their learning experiences, will be welcomed.

Should you be interested in progressing an expression of interest in contributing to the summit the Ministry invites you to respond to us setting out the contribution you would like to make, and outlining your involvement in e-commerce to date, and your future plans.

To assist you in your considerations a note is attached which outlines the summit's goals and focus, the target audiences, and opportunities for partnership and sponsorship. Please indicate to us by 29 May the nature of your interest.Obviously the details of particular arrangement will need more time to be refined so we anticipate having further discussions.

If you have any queries please contact me directly on 04 4601 367 or Marianne.doczi@med.govt.nz .

Yours sincerely

E-Commerce Summit

Government E-Commerce Summit
3 - 4 October, Aotea Centre, Auckland

There is increasing interest in e-commerce and a growing realisation that New Zealand has to move more quickly to adopt e-commerce if it wishes to take advantage of the opportunities and reduce the threats created by use of the Internet for commercial activities.

In order to advance the development of e-commerce in New Zealand, and maximise the contribution e-commerce can make to New Zealand developing as an innovative and inclusive economy, the Government intends to hold an E-Commerce Summit in Auckland in early October.

Summit goals

The e-commerce summit has the following focus and goals:

  • Enabling Government to outline its draft e-commerce strategy for discussion and feedback.
  • Provide opportunities for e-commerce leaders to promote theirsuccesses and publicly share how they achieved them.
  • Provide a forum where businesses, particularly small and mediumenterprises, wishing to adopt e-commerce can learn more about what's involved and build networks that will help them be successful in e-commerce.
  • Increase overall public awareness of the importance of e-commerce to New Zealand's future well being.

Audience

The Summit is aimed primarily at a business audience, particularly SMEs, people who are either involved in e-commerce ventures or advice provision, or who want to learn more about e-commerce, both in relation to the role of government and what other businesses are doing. In addition, attendance is expected from the education, local government, and not-for-profit sectors, and iwi.It is anticipated that around 300-350 people will attend.

Target groups will be senior managers, owners, and directors of:

  • Existing e-commerce companies (both new net entrepreneurs and "old" economy companies using e-commerce - large, medium and small)
  • E-commerce solutions companies
  • Interested but not yet "e-commerce" businesses
  • Industry sectors which stand to benefit from adopting e-commerce.

In addition, there will be a range of non-business operators interested, including:

  • SME leadership (e g chambers of commerce)
  • Investment capital companies
  • Iwi and Maori economic development leadership
  • Business support professionals
  • Education leaders responsible for ensuring that NZ grows our e-commerce skills base
  • Leadership of relevant community sectors such as SeniorNet, local and regional government.

Programme

The intention is to create a dynamic and informative programme with the first day focused on strategy. The provisional programme will combine presentations on Government's strategy by the Prime Minister and the Minister for Information Technology and relevant areas of government business. It is intended to include both overseas and New Zealand keynote speakers. In a sense the first day will take a "top down" approach.

The second day will be more focused on e-commerce in action.Again there will be keynote speakers but participants will break into workshops around particular aspects of e-commerce, with successful e-commerce ventures presenting case studies. There will also be workshops for those less directly involved but with an interest in understanding how e-commerce affects their sector.

The programme is currently being drafted and suggestions as to its format and particular speakers are still welcome.

Partnership/sponsorship opportunities

The opportunities for partnership and sponsorship are likely to include providing or contributing to the provision of the:

  • Keynote speakers
  • Workshop facilitators
  • ICT facilities and multi-media presentations
  • Presentation of case studies
  • Hospitality (refreshments, meals, cocktails)
  • Exhibition stands (trade exhibition will be open to the public)
  • Participant items - satchels, pens, folders, note pads, etc

Benefits for partners/sponsors

The benefits of being involved with the summit will, of course, be unique for each organisation. However generally they will include being seen publicly as a leader in the e-commerce area, by those attending, those who go online to look at summit material, and those who read published material associated with the event.

Depending on the level and type of contribution, there will be opportunities for sponsors to be acknowledged in the programme, during introductions, the conference promotional material provided to participants, associated audio-visual presentations, and press material.

SummaryThe Government anticipates that the e-commerce summit will be a dynamic opportunity for itself, e-commerce leaders and those interested in moving into e-commerce, to come together to strengthen understanding of and commitment to advancing e-commerce in New Zealand. The summit will be an opportunity for dialogue and the sparking of ideas. It will attract much interest and inspire more integration of e-commerce into existing businesses and more Net-focused entrepreneurialism.Given its commitment to partnership with the private sector in advancing e-commerce, Government is interested in enabling a range of organisations to contribute to the Summit's success.
