IAC Report to Council 17/12/05

IAC has not met face to face since the last Council meeting, but has dealt with a number of matters as they have arisen.

The main International Affairs outcomes since the last report have been the WSIS outcome and ICANN Vancouver.

ICANN Vancouver is summarised in my trip report, forwarded separately. Briefly on the ccNSO:

  • Chris Disspain is reelected as Chair
  • .tw will be the ccNSO secretariat
  • the desired bylaw changes have been agreed and passed to the ICANN board for ratification.

The WSIS outcome appears useful. To summarise:

  • There will a new Internet Governance Forum established by the UN
  • The IGF is precluded from involving itself in day to day matters of ICANN
  • The IGF is not an oversight body.

This is real kudos to Keith and his dogged determination not to give in, when he operated as part of the New Zealand government delegation at Prepcom-3.

Other matters:

  • .asia – the IAC has continued with INZ’s earlier position to neither support nor stand in the way of the ..asia sTLD bid.
  • the committee supports the ED’s proposal for INZ to become a corporate member of ISOC.
